Can’t join a WARDOGS server

Three different things get reported as “can’t join”: the server is full, the login queue is holding you, or the connection to a server is failing. They have different fixes, and only one of them is ever an outage. Start by reading which message you are getting.

Server full, even though it showed free slots

A WARDOGS server holds 100 players, and slots are reserved as people are filtering in through the loading screen. The browser shows the players who have finished loading, so a server at 80/100 may already have 20 more committed. On a popular server the gap closes in seconds.

Pick a server with 10 to 20 free slots rather than one or two, and prefer the one lower down the list to the one everybody else is clicking. Our live server list sorts by free slots and shows reserved slots per server, which the in-game browser does not. Community servers are usually quieter than official ones at peak.

Queue full or stuck in the queue

The login queue is BULKHEAD’s backend admitting players in order; it is not per server. It ran into the hundreds of thousands on launch night and BULKHEAD said it cleared from 00:00 UTC on 11 September. A queue now usually means a restart or maintenance is in progress.

Wait it out. Restarting the game sends you to the back. Our status page shows whether official servers are coming back up, which is what a queue is waiting on.

Connection failed or timed out

If the game finds the server but the join fails, it is a handshake between your client and that one server. In order:

  • Try a different server. If another joins fine, the first one was restarting or changing map; it will be back in a minute.
  • If every server fails, check our status page. Several zones returning nothing at once is a backend problem, not yours.
  • Restart Steam and the game to refresh your session, and make sure WARDOGS and its anti-cheat are allowed through your firewall.
  • On Wi-Fi, try a cable. A 100-player match with vehicles is far less forgiving of packet loss than a small shooter.

Wrong region, wrong build

A server in a far zone will join but play badly; check the region tag before you blame the connection. Immediately after a patch, a client that has not updated sees servers it cannot join: verify the game files in Steam and let it download the update.

Password-protected community servers refuse you without the password; it is in the community’s Discord, which is linked from their listing here.

Getting in faster

Things that work at peak hours:

  • Use a join code. Take one from a server with free slots on our live list and enter it in the browser; you skip the list and go straight to that server.
  • Join a community server. They are rented by player groups, often have room when official servers are packed, and many welcome new players.
  • Check the busiest-hours chart on our stats page and play just before the peak rather than in it.
  • Set one region in the browser and keep show-empty on, so servers filling up from empty are visible.

Questions

Why does WARDOGS say the server is full?

Slots are reserved as players load in, so the count you see lags what the server has committed. Choose a server with 10 to 20 free slots, or one further down the list.

Is the WARDOGS queue the server’s queue?

No. It is the backend’s login queue, shared by everyone. It is not tied to the server you clicked, and restarting the game puts you at the back of it.

Are the WARDOGS servers down?

Check our status page, which watches the in-game browser in every zone once a minute. If it says servers are up, a failed join is a full server, a filter or your connection.
